Course Description:
This 20-hour intensive, hands-on course provides participants an opportunity to experience the challenge and excitement of simultaneous interpretation in a controlled setting, with extensive feedback from the instructor and effective peer review. The workshop uses an innovative approach of practice followed by discussion and self-assessment, and has been successfully conducted since 1998. The course’s main purpose is to give participants first-hand experience in the interpretation booth, through staged exercises followed by an in-depth exploration of the important historic and theoretical underpinnings of conference interpretation. Candidates must be fluent in Portuguese and English or Spanish and have at least some translation or interpreting experience. The course is recommended for translators, community interpreters, court and healthcare interpreters in the Portuguese/English and Portuguese/Spanish language pairs. Participants will have a chance to work in the booth from day one, and will keep the recordings of their own performance for future reference. The course uses state-of-the-art infared simultaneous interpretation equipment and walk-in portable booths. The last workshop was offered in May of 2008 to rave reviews.
